I just wanted to share what a difference the Co: Writer iOS app has made for my 7 year-old daughter. My 7 year-old is an avid reader but writing and spelling have been miserably difficult. Her teacher has been focused on using Handwriting Without Tears. The photo below is a sample of her writing that I brought to Closing to Gap to find out what she needs to become a stronger writer. I attended a workshop on Co:Writer and talked to the staff at the Don Johnston booth. I came home and focused on teaching her keyboarding and to use Co:Writer.
In just a few weeks of practicing keyboarding, typing in Co:Writer is already MUCH easier for her than writing. Here is the beginning of a story she wrote, for fun, over several hours this weekend using only the support of Co:Writer.
The day of Make-believe by Ella Sheldon
One day I was marching through town suddenly my bones went frail. I saw something again my bones went frail it was a Scorpion man with wings. I ran home but I felt it was following me. The next day before school my dad told me that the world is dangerous then he gave me a sword and shield. At school my teachers eyes turned red. I stopped, stared and fell down. I woke-up weakened and frail back in bed. My home looked weird and suddenly I realized that it was not my home. I went downstairs and saw it was not my home in fact it was the Scorpion man’s home. I saw a costume of my teacher. I saw a boiler but with lava. Now up close I could see that the Scorpion man had a head to shoulders that was human the rest was Scorpion. I saw that the Scorpion man sorted people by good and bad. I realized with a jolt I was part of bad. Sam my friend was part of bad too. The Scorpion man said “follow me” “NO” me and sam said together. I remembered I had a sword. I pulled it out Sam stared and gasped in surprise when she saw. She had her’s in hand. Swinging my shield in front of me I struck the Scorpion man with my sword “fight us if you dare” I yelled at the Scorpion man. The Scorpion man scrammed in pain I struck him again, again and again.
So yes, she has a rather vivid and violent imagination, but I am just BLOWN away by what she can express with the Co: Writer App that she can’t begin to express without the word prediction and spellcheck and keyboard!
