Don Johnston Professional Services in consultation with CAST offers Institutes addressing the principles and applications of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

UDL Review GraphicDrawing on brain research and innovative media technologies to respond to individual learner differences, UDL is a new paradigm for teaching, learning and assessment.

Where it came from... design of items that appeals to many!

UDL mirrors the universal design movement in architecture and product development. Think of speakerphones and curb cuts—all universally designed to accommodate a wide variety of users. Embedded features that benefit everyone!

What it means... multiple approaches for a diversity of learners!

  • Multiple means of representation gives learners various ways of acquiring information and knowledge
  • Multiple means of expression to provide learners alternatives for demonstrating what they know
  • Multiple means of engagement to tap into learners' interests, offer appropriate challenges and increase motivation

What makes it work... each brain is wired and works differently!

Recent research in neuroscience shows that each brain processes information differently. The way we learn is as individual as DNA or fingerprints. Research has identified three primary brain networks and the roles they play in learning.

  • Recognition networks... gathers facts. How we identify and categorize what we see, hear and read. Identifying letters, words or an author's style are recognition tasks.
  • Strategic networks... plans and performs tasks. How we organize and express our ideas. Writing an essay or solving a math problem are strategic tasks.
  • Affective networks... how students are engaged and motivated. How they are challenged, excited or interested. These are affective dimensions.

Where it needs to go... becoming a reality in all schools!

No single curriculum or software program can provide all of the flexibility needed to create a UDL environment. This requires assembling a variety of tools, programs and materials that can be used in different combinations for different learners and for different teaching purposes. Instead of one assumed standard with variations, variations comprise the standard.

Framework for Institutes

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for curriculum design that fosters access to learning for everyone. Based in research about the learning brain and the development of new digital media, UDL helps identify and remove barriers from teaching methods and curriculum materials, enabling each student to engage with learning and to progress. Imagine that students who have always been left behind finally have the opportunity to learn and to love learning. With Universal Design for Learning, today's classrooms will be a learning environment for all students.

This hands-on training takes place in a lab that embeds the investigation of several technology tools and fosters a community of learners' approach of professional development. During the training, participants are encouraged to create their implementation plan.

Training materials include the book Teaching Every Student in the Digital Age: Universal Design for Learning, by David H. Rose and Anne Meyer (ASCD, 2002).

We appreciate the time constraints that most educators face when planning their professional development workshops throughout the school year. To accommodate your growing requests, we will now offer our custom UDL Training Institutes direct to you. Talk with your Educational Support Specialist about scheduling a UDL Institute at your location for 12 or more educators. This custom UDL workshop for you will include the most up-to-date research, hands-on implementation models and rich teacher-student materials all delivered by a certified UDL Trainer at your facility. UDL advances your knowledge and helps you incorporate proven and innovative approaches to effectively deliver Universal Design for Learning principles.

The Universally Designed Classroom

David Rose, Anne Meyer and Chuck Hitchcock

At a time when federal law guarantees every student the right to a high-quality education, it is essential to translate scenically validated instructional interventions and teaching approaches into useful classroom practices. Using technologies within the inclusive framework on Universal Design for Learning provides a way to do so - and thereby to increase educational opportunities for students of all abilities.

The book is divided into two sections. The first addresses the concept of Universal Design for Learning; the second addresses the practical application of UDL in the classroom. Each chapter opens with a summary of key ideas and a graphic organizer that illustrates how concepts fit together.
